What is Audiology?

Audiology is the field of research and clinical practice devoted to the study of hearing disorders, assessment of hearing, hearing conservation, and aural rehabilitation. The name of this type of clinician is an Audiologist. An audiologist’s main duty is the management and rehabilitation of hearing and balance-related disorders. They are specialist physicians who are trained in caring for patients of all age groups.

How Your Appointment Works

Preparation

There’s usually no special preparation required. Simply let our team know if you have any specific needs when booking, and we’ll ensure you’re accommodated.

First appointment (~30 mins)

During your first visit, we will review your medical history and conduct a thorough ear examination. You will receive your hearing test results immediately, and if hearing aids are required, we can often arrange a fitting on the same day.

Follow-up (~45 mins, 6–8 weeks later)

Six to eight weeks after your fitting, a follow-up is arranged to ensure your comfort and sound quality. We provide excerpt advice on maintenance, battery management, and app connectivity to ensure you hit your listening goals. 

Aftercare

Our commitment doesn’t end at the fitting. We provide ongoing helpline, cleaning kits, battery replacemnets and other aftercare services.

We offer follow-up appointments and phone support to assist with any adjustments, cleaning and technical support. 

They help you hear everyday sounds, improve speech clarity, reduce the volume of background noise, and boost your confidence in conversation and social settings. 

You’ll meet one of our audiologists, share your history, have ear and hearing tests, and receive your results immediately. If hearing aids are recommended, we’ll discuss options and may fit them the same day.

Yes. Typically, 6 to 8 weeks after the hearing aid fitting, review how you’re adapting and make any necessary adjustments.

SENSORY PROVISION

The Sensory Provision service is part of the Physical Disabilities Service and provides support for people with a sensory impairment who live in Manchester aged 18+.
The Linkworkers provide information and advice around the areas of welfare rights, benefits, housing and debt management. The Linkworkers also enable people to access the full range of council services, and signpost and refer to other services where their expertise is exceeded.
If you are registered blind or partially sighted, or Deaf you could be entitled to the following: free bus pass, or reduced fare, reduced taxi fare travel voucher scheme, discounted rail travel, reduced TV license, extra Tax allowance, or Disability Living allowance.
The service is responsible for all aspects of visual need and will assess and customise rehabilitation programs according to the needs of the individual; these can include the following.
Mobility and cane training, Daily Living Skills, Counselling, Retraining, Employment/Educational Support and Communication Skills
Sensory Equipment and Adaptations help maintain a person’s independence within the home, by providing equipment and adaptations to a person with a sensory impairment. A member of staff will be available to discuss what equipment is available or arrange a visit. The free equipment includes items like text phones, fax machines, flashing light doorbells and talking clocks. The Assessment officers also provide aids and equipment for under 18’s.

Action on Hearing Loss is the new name for RNID. It is a charity that offers a range of services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing and provide information and support on all aspects of deafness, hearing loss and tinnitus.

Hearing Link is the UK hearing loss organisation that makes it easy to find the right information, appropriate services, and meaningful connections with other people.

NADP is a professional association for those working in the Tertiary education sector involved in the management or delivery of services for disabled students. Their aim is to promote excellence in the quality and consistency of educational supports services provided for disabled student.

Manchester Deaf Centre is the largest organisation in Greater Manchester providing support to a wide range of people with sensory impairment. The centre is a popular place for D/deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing people to meet and socialise and also to access information and our Communication Service that enables Deaf and hearing people to communicate in a wide variety of settings.
