What is an Endoscopy?

An endoscopy is a minimally invasive imaging test which is used to help specialist clinicians examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity. During the procedure, the inside of the body is examined using an instrument called an endoscope; an endoscope is a long, thin, flexible tube that has a light source and a small camera on the end. Images are relayed onto a television screen and therefore used to identify and diagnose a range of conditions and abnormalities. Endoscopes can be inserted into the body through a natural opening, such as the mouth, the throat, or through the bottom.

Endoscopy Services and Procedures we offer:

The three main Endoscopy procedures we perform are:
Gastroscopies (also known as Oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy or OGD), where the scope is passed down your Oesophagus to view your stomach.
Colonoscopies where the scope is passed through the bottom to view your bowels.
Sigmoidoscopies, where the scope is passed through the bottom to view the lower part of your colon.
All our procedures are undertaken by highly skilled consultants or surgeon-level doctors with support from a team of specialist Nurses and ODPs.

Diagnostic Endoscopies We Offer

We offer a full range of procedures to investigate your symptoms and give actionable insights:

Gastroscopy (OGD) – a thin camera tube is gently guided down your oesophagus to view your stomach and upper small bowel

Colonoscopy – the scope enters via the rectum to examine your large bowel; doctors can take biopsies or remove polyps during the same visit
Sigmoidoscopies, where the scope is passed through the rectum. to view the lower part of your colon.
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy – focused on the lower colon, without full bowel prep; a short, effective test
Transnasal Endoscopy (TNE) – a thinner tube passes through the nose for a more comfortable upper gut exam

An endoscopy uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to look at your digestive tract. At Beacon, we offer gastroscopy, colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy and transnasal endoscopy to investigate symptoms and identify conditions like reflux, ulcers, inflammation or early signs of cancer.
The procedure itself is usually 20 to 45 minutes. Including check-in, discussion and recovery, allow up to 3 hours at our clinic.
For gastroscopy, we offer local throat spray or conscious sedation. For colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, sedation or Entonox gas is available depending on your preference and whether you will drive afterwards.
All procedures are performed by consultant gastroenterologists or surgeons, supported by specialist nursing staff and operating department practitioners (ODPs) .
